Rikki McCormick and Kristen Douglas present: Self-Regulation in a Virtual Setting

After March 2020, districts across the state embarked upon the virtual education system journey. Instruction and student support (telehealth, tele-counseling, remote food preparation…) were delivered virtually. In the world of social-emotional learning, calming spaces to help promote self-regulation in a brick-and-mortar setting were just gaining traction as a SEL practice when, again, virtual became the only option. Virtual calming spaces found their place, although still evolving, as the option to promote self-regulation.

Rikki McCormick

Dr. Rikki McCormick is an Education Associate in the Office of Special Education Services for the South Carolina Department of Education. She was previously the Director of Special Education and Student Support Services for Lincoln County Schools in Hamlin, WV. She completed her undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training at Concord University and has done her graduate work through Marshall University (M.A. Special Education, Ed.S. Curriculum and Instruction, Ed.D. Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Educational Technology). Dr. McCormick’s dissertation focused on Twitter’s uses in education. Her research interests have been in auditory processing disorder, D/deaf education, trauma informed care, youth mental health, educational technology, and digital citizenship.


Krysten Douglas

Krysten Douglas has worked in the field of education for the last 26 years. Krysten began her teaching career as self-contained special education teacher. Krysten has wide range of classroom teaching experience. She has taught middle school special education, middle school general education, elementary special education and elementary general education. Currently, Krysten is an education associate with the South Carolina Department of Education in the Office of Assessment and Standards.
